ISH Wins NCPEDP - Mphasis Universal Design Award

ISH news has recently won an award at NCPEDP – Mphasis Universal Design Awards. This is because of our commitment to provide accessibility for all.

Estimates put the population of persons with disabilities in India at 70-100 million. Yet, it is only a small percentage of the population that has been seen in the mainstream of any aspect of life in the country; be it the workforce, education or anything else.

Any study undertaken to determine the reason for this would point to only one direction and that would be the lack of accessibility. Accessibility means access to information, technology, transport, services, aids and appliances, etc. For example, books are not available in Braille for the blind, there is no ISL translation on TV for news, serials, etc., no ramps for people on wheelchairs, etc.

These are just a few examples.

In order to provide accessibility be it on TV, printing books, in transport, technology, etc. people need to follow the concept of ‘Universal Design’.

When an initiative is designed using ‘Universal Design’,  it accommodates people with disabilities, older people, children, and others in a way that is not stigmatizing and benefits all users.

Universal Design has attained major ground in the developed nations, but in developing countries like India, this concept is yet to attain popularity. In fact, awareness on Universal Design is close to none and there have been very few attempts to educate architects, designers and others about this. In order to spread awareness on Universal Design and to popularise this concept, NCPEDP, in association with Mphasis, instituted The NCPEDP – Mphasis Universal Design Awards in 2010.

The Awards are given under four categories

CATEGORY A: PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

CATEGORY B: WORKING PROFESSIONALS

CATEGORY C: COMPANIES/ORGANISATIONS

NCPEDP –Mphasis Javed Abidi Public Policy Awards

We are proud to announce that ISH has won the NCPEDP – Mphasis Universal Design Award in the companies/organisations category!

This is because of ISH’s objective towards providing accessible videos in Indian Sign Language, with subtitles and Voice-Over. Our adherence to ‘Universal Design’ enables anyone to understand our videos because of their 100% accessibility.

Have a look at our Founder & CEO Mr Alok Kejriwal receiving the award.

Our entire team is very grateful to NCPEDP & MPHASIS for the award and also our loyal viewers. We promise to continue spreading accessibility across India.
