India's Economy is DEAD, Says US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has started taking tough steps against India, including tariffs and public threats, raising concerns about the future of India–US relations.

Since Donald Trump became the President of the United States again, his actions have created tension with many countries. Now, India too seems to be facing the heat. Starting from 1st August 2025, Trump has announced 25% tariffs on Indian goods. This decision shocked many, as India and the US are seen as close allies. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said that India is a friend, but its tariffs on US goods are too high. He even warned India with a “penalty” but didn’t clearly say what it would be. Trump blamed India’s oil and military trade with Russia for his strong move.

India’s Commerce Ministry replied that it is studying the matter carefully and will do whatever is necessary to protect the country’s interest. But Trump didn’t stop there. On 31st July, he made another post saying he doesn’t care about India’s ties with Russia and that India’s economy is failing. This comes at a time when India and the US are still discussing a Bilateral Trade Agreement, which both PM Modi and Trump had promised would be completed by the end of 2025. So far, no deal has been finalised.

In another move, Trump also put sanctions on six Indian companies, accusing them of trading petroleum products with Iran. According to the US, this trade helps the Iranian government support terrorism and cause trouble in the Middle East. As if that wasn’t enough, Trump made yet another surprise announcement — he said the US has signed an oil deal with Pakistan. He even said that maybe one day Pakistan will sell oil to India.

This announcement came as a shock, especially considering the poor relations between India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif quickly thanked Trump for the support. However, no proper details have been shared about this so-called oil deal. In the past too, Pakistan made similar claims, but most of them turned out to be false.

Some people believe Trump is acting this way because India didn’t support his campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir had met Trump earlier and supported his Nobel bid, but India stayed silent. Trump often says that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, but India has always denied this. Some feel Trump is now angry and trying to punish India by using tariffs, harsh posts, and this “oil deal” with Pakistan as a warning.

All this has raised big questions about the future of India–US relations. Many experts in the US have criticised Trump. A top geopolitical expert, Evan Feigenbaum, said that Trump may destroy 25 years of effort to build a strong US–India partnership. Earlier Presidents like George Bush and Barack Obama worked hard to improve ties with India, and now many fear that Trump’s actions are damaging that work.

However, it’s not all bad news. On the same day Trump made his harsh comments, India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla congratulated ISRO and NASA for the successful launch of the NISAR satellite. This is the first joint space mission between India and the US. It will help study forests, oceans, and climate change. This shows that even though there is tension, the two countries still cooperate in science and technology.

So, while Trump’s actions are definitely serious and worrying, it’s also true that political leaders change and policies don’t stay the same forever. The strong connection between India and the US may face a challenge today, but it is not broken completely.
