Famous Bollywood Singer Alka Yagnik Goes Deaf?
Famous Bollywood Singer Alka Yagnik announced that she has been diagnosed with the rare sensorineural hearing loss through an Instagram post. Watch this video full to know what it is.
This is about the famous Indian female playback singer, Alka Yagnik. You must have seen her at various award functions and judging multiple singing reality shows. Yagnik has sung more than 9,000 songs in over 300 Bollywood and regional movies, making her India’s fifth most prolific Bollywood singer of all time and the third topmost female playback singer who has sung the maximum number of female solos in Bollywood.
She has won 2 National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and 7 Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.
On 17th June 2024, Yagnik posted a close-up picture of herself on Instagram and made a shocking revelation about her health in the caption addressed to her fans, friends, followers, and well-wishers.
She wrote that she walked out of a flight a few weeks ago and suddenly could not hear anything. She revealed that the doctors had diagnosed her condition as the rare sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). She said this was the reason for her being missing in action for weeks.
SNHL is a type of hearing loss. Dr. (Prof) Ameet Kishore, an ENT, neuro-otology, and cochlear implant surgeon at New Delhi’s Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, explained that the inner part of our ear contains tiny hair cells (nerve endings). These hair cells convert the sounds we hear into electric signals and transfer them to the brain through our auditory nerves. When these auditory nerves, or the hair cells, or both get damaged, it causes hearing loss. This type of hearing loss is known as SNHL. SNHL can occur rapidly within a few minutes to three days.
Yagnik further added that this sudden major setback caught her in severe shock and she is still trying to accept it. She explained how it took her several weeks to gather the courage to share this news with her fans and followers and asked them to pray for her. She announced that she is taking a break from her super-successful career to focus on her health and also warned everyone about the risks of developing hearing loss by listening to loud music and using headphones and earbuds.
Yagnik’s post went viral with concerned fans, followers, and iconic Bollywood and music personalities expressing their worry and wishing Yagnik a healthy recovery.
According to the doctors, listening to music at high volumes damages the inner hair cells, which can cause permanent hearing loss. Using headphones puts direct pressure on the ear’s auditory nerves, causing stress and fatigue in the entire auditory system. This gets even worse when earbuds are used because, unlike headphones, earbuds sit directly in the ear canal and deliver the sound more directly to the eardrums.
Using headphones or earbuds can cause other health issues too. Excessive use of headphones and earbuds can cause an excessive buildup of earwax, which can block the ear canal and lead to ringing ears, ear pain, itchiness, odour and fluid discharge from ears, dizziness, and even temporary hearing loss.
Using uncleaned headphones and earbuds or sharing them with others can cause severe allergic reactions, rashes, and ear infections because, according to a study, headphones and earbuds have six times more germs and bacteria than the kitchen sink.
Therefore, here are measures to prevent all this:
- Avoid using headphones and earbuds whenever possible.
- When using, follow the 60/60 rule i.e., listen at 60% volume for not more than 60 minutes at a stretch to give your ears enough rest.
- Clean your headphones and earbuds with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth daily before and after use.
Let’s all pray for Alka Yagnik’s speedy recovery and take her advice seriously to protect our hearing.
