Democrats Take Power Away From Trump’s Republicans in US Midterm Elections ?

Democrats have won control of both chambers of the US Congress in the 3 November midterm elections, ending the Republican Party’s control of the House and Senate.

Trump Remains US President, But Democrats Take Control of Congress

Reports about the US midterm elections may sound as if Donald Trump has lost his position as President. But that is not what happened. Trump remains the President of the United States until January 2029. However, his Republican Party has lost control of both chambers of Congress. The opposition Democratic Party has won majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

So, what are midterm elections, and why do these results matter?

What are midterm elections?

The US President is elected for a four-year term. Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election and began his second term on 20 January 2025. His current term is due to end on 20 January 2029. However, elections for the US Congress take place every two years. When these elections happen halfway through a President’s four-year term, they are called midterm elections.

These elections do not decide who becomes President. Instead, they decide which political party will control Congress.

What is the US Congress?

The US Congress is the country’s national legislature. It has two chambers:

  • House of Representatives: It has 435 voting members. All seats are contested every two years, and members serve two-year terms.
  • Senate: It has 100 members, with two senators representing each of the 50 states. Senators serve six-year terms. Elections are staggered, so roughly one-third of the Senate seats are contested every two years.

Before the 2026 midterm elections, Trump’s Republican Party controlled both chambers.

What changed after the elections?

The Democratic Party won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Associated Press called the Senate for Democrats on election night on 3 November and the House early on 4 November. Democrats crossed the numbers needed to control both chambers.

This means Trump will remain President, but his party will no longer control Congress.

What happens next?

The new Congress is scheduled to begin on 3 January 2027.

Once the new Congress takes office, Democrats will hold the majority in both chambers. They will have greater influence over congressional leadership, committee work, investigations, government spending and the issues Congress takes up. This could make the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency very different from the first two.

A President does not automatically lose office when the opposition party wins control of Congress. However, a Congress controlled by the opposition can make it harder for the President to pass laws and advance policies. The election has therefore changed the balance of political power in Washington, even though Trump remains President.
