World Disability Day Walk at Delhi

On 3rd December 2019 which was World Disability Day, National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) conducted the walk with the American India Foundation (AIF),National Association of Deaf (NAD) and other organisations. The NCPEDP has been doing this for the last 5 years. The walk was held at India Gate in Delhi. 

NAD conducted a skit as well which showed the problems of people with disability. Hundreds of people attended the event. The chief guest was K Sanghvi, AIF director of livelihood and employment, and NCPEDP trustee and secretary of NAD AS Narayanan. A woman named Shruti Jha said that her son has autism. She said the public places like the metros and malls do have any accessibility for people with disabilities. Another woman named Sunaina said that her sister is disabled as well but there are no good schools near her home and has to travel a long distance to take her sister to school. 

All the leaders were aggressively discussing the RPWD Act 2016.Arman Ali NCPEDP Director said that, there is a 4% reservation for people with disabilities but the government is not clear about its execution. The private sector in urban areas follows the rules but in rural areas the rules are completely ignored.Mr A S Narayanan said that there are very few interpreters and many do not know sign language. He has urged everyone to sign a petition sign a petition on change.org to make Sign language the 23rd official language of India
