Karnataka: Class 9 Girl Delivers Baby in Hostel Washroom
A 17-year-old Class 9 student gave birth in a Karnataka school washroom on 27–28 August 2025, sparking outrage and investigations into safety lapses and possible abuse.
In a shocking incident, a 17-year-old Class 9 student at a government residential school in Shahapur taluk, Yadgir district, Karnataka, gave birth to a baby boy in the school washroom on the evening of 27–28 August 2025. The school staff, alerted by the baby’s cries, rushed the girl to hospital. Both mother and child are stable and receiving medical care. The event has sparked public outrage and raised urgent concerns over safety and supervision in residential schools.
As per school norms, monthly health check-ups are mandatory. However, the pregnancy went unnoticed. The Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS) suspended at least two teachers, while authorities launched an inquiry into the negligence.
Principal Basamma stated that the student had remained absent for many days since June, citing illness, and resumed attendance only from 5 August. She claimed no symptoms of pregnancy were visible. Police and child-rights bodies are now probing whether the girl was sexually abused, reviewing CCTV footage, questioning staff and students, and gathering evidence. The Child Rights Commission has demanded a detailed report.
The incident has triggered nationwide debate on child safety, accountability, and the urgent need for stronger health and protection measures in schools.
