Since India was placed under lockdown on March 25, there have been reports of liquor stores being looted and black marketing of alcohol in several states of India. People in India are not very happy with the ban of alcohol in many states. Now Modi announced an extension of the lockdown in various states. Some states have appealed for reopening liquor stores. During PM Modi’s meeting with the CMs, they all said the liquor shops must be kept open during the lockdown as they are a big source of income for the government. The International Spirits & Wine Association of India (ISWAI)—a body representing India's liquor makers—has also requested central and state governments to consider online sale of alcohol.

They have requested that the alcohol can be sold in areas where there are not many OCVID-19 cases. The Meghalaya government has allowed liquor stores to remain open from 9 am to 4 pm between April 13 to April 17. However, the government has strictly said rules must be followed and people must stand away from each other. Once the lockdown is extended and the Central Government announces new rules, the states will decide whether to open wine shops or not.
