Will India Be Renamed to Bharat?

Speculation surrounds the potential name change from India to Bharat, with a special parliamentary session set to address the matter.

The official invite sent out for the G20 summit dinner to be hosted at the Rashtrapati Bhawan mention 'President of Bharat' instead of 'President of India! This has sparked speculations about the Central government to change the name of the country from India to Bharat. This is the first time an official invitation mentioned ‘Bharat’ and not India and it has drawn criticism from the opposition parties. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reacted to the changes in the dinner invite and in a Tweet said that the news of name change seems to be true. If this change happens, it wouldn't be the first instance of a country officially changing its name. This is something that countries have done before, often influenced by politics, nationalism or branding factors.

Here are some countries:

Turkiye - Formerly Turkey

Sri Lanka - Formerly Ceylon

The Netherlands - Formerly Holland

Thailand - Formerly Siam

Myanmar - Formerly Burma

Iran – Formerly Persia

The five-day special session of Parliament is set to begin on 18 September 2023. There is a lot of anticipation that the government may officially change the name from 'India' to ‘Bharat’ through a constitutional amendment under Article 368. The city of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh underwent name change to Prayagraj in 2018. As per government estimates, the renaming of Allahabad cost the state government upwards of Rs 300 crore. If the country’s name was changed from India to Bharat, this would be a very big thing. Some of the cost would be incurred in activities such as updating the maps, road navigation system, highway landmarks, official paraphernalia used in state and civic authority offices, etc. Plus the cost of rebranding and telling the world that our name has been changed. All of this would cost around Rs 14,000 crore. Lot of celebrities have supported the name change to Bharat. Amitabh Bachchan, Adah Sharma, Virendra Sehwag, etc. Do you know the meaning of India, Bharat and Hindustan? Well ISH News had released a video about this.
