Why Did a 41-Year-Old Woman File a Complaint Against Parents for Not Getting Her Married?

Madhuri Patel accused her family of stopping her marriage and harassment, while the family denied it and linked the issue to a property dispute.

A 41-year-old woman, Madhuri Patel, from Prayagraj, has approached the police with an unusual complaint against her own family. She said that people in her neighbourhood often question why she is still unmarried, but her family has been stopping her from getting married for many years.

In her complaint, Madhuri alleged that her parents, brother, sister-in-law and sister have mentally and physically harassed her whenever she spoke about marriage. She claimed that her brother and sister-in-law rejected all marriage proposals because they did not want to spend money on her wedding.

She also said that she has been living separately for the past 20 years without any financial support from her family. According to her, she has been earning on her own by teaching children and working at shops and beauty parlours. She further alleged that whenever her family finds out where she is working, they interfere and try to get her removed from the job.

Madhuri claimed that the situation became worse on 27 April 2026, when she again raised the topic of marriage. She said her family members entered her room and assaulted her.

In her appeal to the police, she has asked for protection and also requested help in finding a suitable partner so that she can live with dignity and respect.

However, her family has denied all the allegations. Her mother said that Madhuri had earlier chosen to focus on her studies instead of marriage and had completed a Diploma in Elementary Education with the family’s support.

The family also claimed that the issue is related to a property dispute. According to them, some relatives encouraged Madhuri to ask for a share in her father’s land, and the allegations are linked to this matter.

Madhuri, on the other hand, alleged that her brother had transferred the family land to his name but is not taking responsibility for her marriage.

Police officials said that no FIR has been registered yet. They have heard both sides and provided counselling, and the matter is still under investigation.
