In the Government Primary School in Daudpur village of Mainpuri district in Uttar Pradesh. Sixty of the 80 children belong to Scheduled Castes Scheduled Tribe (SC /ST). Everyday the children are served free mid-day meals by the government. However on 15th September some parents complained to about discrimination with the SC / ST students to Sahab Singh. Sahab Singh said, “On September 18, I went to the school for a meeting. I saw the kitchen was dirty and that only 10-15 plates were kept there. I asked the cooks where the other plates were. The staff said that 50-60 plates were kept separately because they belonged to SC / ST students. SC / ST students were made to wash their plates as no one wanted to touch them.” Sahab Singh then told his wife Manju Devi about this and she is the Sarpanch. Manju Devi then herself inspected the school and told the principal, Garima Rajput, that this is wrong and should not happen.
However, the principal ignored the issue and said this is how the school has been functioning and will continue to do in the future as well.
A complaint was filed with the Mainpuri Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA). A team was then sent to the school for inspection and the complaint of caste discrimination was found to be true. During the investigation, the two cooks and kitchen staff told the officials that they will not wash any utensils of the SC/ST students. Soon the District Magistrate Mahendra Bahadur Singh took action and fired the two cooks. The Principal has also been suspended as she ignored the complaints and was doing discrimination against the SC / ST students.
