Rashtrapati Bhavan to Host a Wedding for the First Time Ever!
For the first time, Rashtrapati Bhavan will host a wedding, with CRPF officer Poonam Gupta marrying Avneesh Kumar on February 12, 2025, in a historic event.
In a historic first, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India, will serve as the venue for a wedding. Known for its high security and being off-limits for personal events like weddings and festivals, the Rashtrapati Bhavan will host the wedding of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer, Poonam Gupta, and CRPF assistant commandant, Avneesh Kumar, on 12th February 2025.
Poonam Gupta, currently serving as the personal security officer (PSO) of the President, is a highly qualified officer with a bachelor’s degree in Maths, a post-graduate degree in English Literature, and a B.Ed from Gwalior’s Jiwaji University. She ranked 81st in the UPSC CAPF exam and has served in challenging areas like Naxal-affected regions of Bihar. Poonam also led an all-women contingent during the 74th Republic Day parade, displaying her leadership and dedication to her duties. Active on social media, Poonam regularly inspires young aspiring officers and students, especially women, to follow their dreams.
Avneesh Kumar, her fiancé, is also a well-qualified officer currently posted in Jammu & Kashmir.
Though the Rashtrapati Bhavan has not yet made any official announcement, several reports suggest that President Droupadi Murmu has approved the wedding. It is said that the guest list will be short and exclusive, with all attendees undergoing strict security checks. In a rare gesture, reports even claim that President Murmu may officiate the ceremony herself. The reason for this special approval is believed to be the President’s admiration for Poonam Gupta's exceptional dedication and service as the PSO.
The news has sparked mixed reactions from the public and politicians. Some have praised President Murmu for recognizing the hard work and dedication of CRPF officers by allowing this special wedding, while others have raised concerns about the appropriateness of hosting personal events at such an iconic national institution. Questions about traditions and propriety have been raised, with some feeling uncomfortable about using a place of national importance for private celebrations.
The wedding of Poonam Gupta and Avneesh Kumar at Rashtrapati Bhavan is a unique and historic event. Whether or not this should set a precedent for future personal events at such prominent national venues remains to be seen. What do you think? Should weddings be allowed at Rashtrapati Bhavan?
