In Dhatkidih village, Jharkhand 24 year old Tabrez Ansari a Muslim, was tied him to a pole and brutally assaulted by a mob. They forced him to chant “Jai Shri Ram and “Jai Hanuman”. He was beaten for hours. You would think he was beaten up for transporting cattle for slaughter or possessing beef. However people suspected him of theft. The police came very late. They merely took him into custody based on a complaint of theft. They did not record his injuries and did not even mentioned in the FIR that he was assaulted. It was only after his condition worsened in jail that he was taken to hospital, where he died.It is distressing that lynching, as a consequence of vigilantism, communal bigotry and the dissemination of hate messages and rumours on social media, has become a social trend.

Organised vigilantism by cow protection groups was initially behind a wave of lynchings; rumour-mongering through social media platforms. Tabrez Ansari’s situations shows that the situation has transformed into something worse, where people from different religions are forced to chant Hindu slogans.

On June 23, police arrested 11 residents of the village. Only five of the men had completed Class 10, most are either daily wage labourers, unemployed or were looking for a job. The police has suspended two police personnel as well. Till now 18 people in Jharkhandd have lost their lives to lynching. 11 of them were Muslims. Muslim community leaders have demanded that lynching should be treated on a par with terrorism and the culprits should get the strictest possible punishment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that the lynching of the man in Jharkhand has caused him a lot of pain. He said that the guilty will be given the strictest punishment.
