Lok Sabha Passes Citizenship (Amendment) Bill
The Lok Sabha passes the Citizenship Amendment bill causing riots in Assam.
On Tuesday the Lok Sabha passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which will provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants and refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians will be able to obtain Indian citizenship. Citizenship will be given to people who came to the country before December 2014 and have lived in the country for more than 6 years.
The Bill was passed by the BJP in the Lok Sabha. Opposing parties such as the Congress, Shiv Sena and the Trinamool Congress strongly opposed the Bill. The Congress party walked out of the Lok Sabha Protesting the Bill.
According to them, the Bill was providing citizenship on the basis of religion. They said that in a secular country we can not determine citizenship on the basis of religion. The Opposing parties said that the bill was passed by the BJP to attract Bengali Hindu votes in the North East
In Assam there are many riots because of this Bill. There are many illegal immigrants in Assam both Hindu and Muslim.The people of Assam do not want such people to get citizenship as it will be a threat to their culture and way of life.
