Kolkata: Safest Indian City for the Third Time

Kolkata emerges as the safest city of India for the third consecutive time according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) official report.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has reaffirmed Kolkata as India's safest city for the third consecutive year in its recent report titled “Crime in India 2022.” Analyzing crime data from various states and Union Territories, the report highlights Kolkata’s commendable position with the lowest identifiable crime rate per lakh population among cities with over 2 million residents.

Kolkata reported a noteworthy decline in identifiable crimes, standing at 86.5 cases per lakh people in 2022 compared to 103.4 in 2021, marking a substantial 16% decrease. This accomplishment places Kolkata firmly ahead of other major cities like Pune and Hyderabad, which registered 280.7 and 299.2 cases per lakh people, respectively.

The city also boasts the lowest rate of cognizable crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), with only 78.2 cases per lakh population. Chennai and Coimbatore follow suit at 178.5 and 211.2, respectively, further emphasizing Kolkata's superior safety record.

Despite this recognition, Kolkata witnessed a rise in reported cases of crimes against women, increasing from 1,783 in 2021 to 1,890 in 2022. However, senior police officials attribute Kolkata's overall safety to the relentless dedication of law enforcement personnel who tirelessly work day and night to ensure the city's security.

Presently, Kolkata maintains jurisdiction over 89 police stations, including specialized units such as nine women's police stations and two cybercrime units, reflecting the city's proactive approach to addressing various safety concerns.

This consistent recognition of Kolkata as India's safest city underscores the collective efforts of law enforcement agencies and instills confidence among the city's residents, reaffirming Kolkata's status as a safe haven for its people.
