IPL Cricketer Abhishek Porel Arrested in Rape Case Filed by Medical Student

IPL cricketer Abishek Porel was arrested after a Karnataka medical student accused him of rape, abuse, and threatening to leak private videos.

Bengal cricketer Abishek Porel, who plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL and Bengal in domestic cricket, has been arrested in a rape case filed by a medical student from Karnataka.

According to the woman's complaint, she first met Porel in January 2023, and they were in a relationship for around three and a half years. She said they had planned to marry, their families knew about the relationship, and they had also travelled abroad together.

She alleged that problems began around one and a half years ago when Porel started distancing himself and later denied their relationship. She also claimed that he was involved with other women and that he physically and mentally abused her.

In her complaint, she alleged that on 2 April 2026, she went to Delhi to meet Porel, where he confined her, assaulted her and denied her food. She said she later became unwell and needed hospital treatment.

The woman also alleged that Porel forced her into sexual relations at his flat in Hooghly when his parents were away and secretly recorded private moments. She further claimed that he later threatened to make the private photos and videos public.

On 23 June 2026, the woman and her mother filed a complaint at Mogra Police Station in Hooghly, West Bengal. Police registered a case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 69, along with provisions of the Information Technology Act.

During the investigation, police visited Porel's residence several times but could not find him. The woman later approached the Calcutta High Court, alleging delays in the investigation and expressing concern about her private electronic material.

On 14 July 2026, the Calcutta High Court directed police to arrest Porel and another accused and ordered them to seize electronic devices to prevent any evidence from being deleted or shared.

Following the court's order, Mogra Police arrested Porel late on 10 August. The other accused, reportedly Porel's friend, has not yet been arrested.

Porel has denied all the allegations, calling them baseless, and said he would respond after the police investigation. On 11 August, a court rejected his bail plea and sent him to three days of police custody. On 12 August, the court gave the investigation more time and adjourned the next hearing to 14 September 2026.
