Indonesia Tsunami Kills Hundreds After Volcano Eruption

Volcanic activity triggers a Tsunami in Indonesia killing hundreds of people.

On Saturday, 23 December 2018 there was a tsunami in Indonesia because of the Krakatau Volcano which erupted. This caused a tsunami in the Indian Ocean.  Giant waves hit the coastal towns of Java and Sumatra. Around 222 people died and more than 800 people were injured.

Hundreds of homes have been destroyed and the residents were forced to evacuate. TV images showed that seconds after the tsunami occured, the water dragged many people and large pieces of wood and metal along with it. Authorities have warned tourists and the residents near the coastal areas to stay away from beaches as there is a high tide warning till 25 December.Authorities have warned tourists and the residents near the coastal areas to stay away from beaches as there is a high tide warning till 25 December.It has become very difficult for rescue workers and ambulances to help people because the roads are blocked by all the damaged houses and fallen trees.

Tsunamis are very common in Indonesia. A tsunami in September 2018 killed more than 2000 people. On 26 December 2004 a tsunami in the Indian Ocean killed more than 2,28,000 people in 13 countries but Indonesia had suffered the most.
