Father Brings Divorced Daughter Home With a Baraat; Calls Her His ‘Devi Durga’

Ranchi woman Sakshi Gupta rebuilt her life and remarried with dignity after her father brought her home in a viral baraat following dowry harassment.

In 2022, a young woman named Sakshi Gupta from Ranchi, Jharkhand, entered into an arranged marriage with Sachin Kumar on 28 April 2022. Sachin worked as an assistant engineer at the Jharkhand Electricity Distribution Company.

During the marriage arrangements, Sakshi’s father Prem Gupta reportedly gave around ?17 lakh, while some reports claimed the amount was ?25 lakh to the groom’s family.

However, within just 20 days of the wedding, Sakshi’s life became extremely difficult. According to her, Sachin and his family began demanding ?25 lakh as dowry. She alleged that she was locked in a room without electricity or water, while her husband would disappear for days. She also claimed that Sachin and his parents harassed her, physically abused her, and at times even threw her out of the house.

Sakshi initially remained silent because her father was battling cancer and she did not want to worry him. Months later, neighbours informed her parents that something was wrong. When her father asked her directly, she revealed everything. He immediately asked her to return home and helped her file for divorce. During this process, the family also discovered that Sachin had already been married twice earlier and had hidden this information.

On the first day of Navratri in 2023, on 15 October, Sakshi was packing her belongings to leave her marital home when she heard loud music outside. When she stepped out, she saw her father had arrived with a full wedding-style baraat to take her home. The procession included relatives, a band, music and fireworks.

Her father told her, Beta jis samman se bheja tha, vaise hi leke jaunga. Tum meri Devi Durga ho. Sakshi walked out smiling and returned home with dignity and love.

The emotional video went viral after her father posted it on Facebook. In the caption, he wrote that if a daughter’s marriage turns out to be wrong, parents should bring her back home with full respect because daughters are very precious.

Over the next two years, Sakshi rebuilt her life with strong support from her father and brother. She moved to Delhi, used her fashion designing degree, and started a small boutique. She focused on her career and was not planning to marry again.

Later, she met Kunal, who had seen the viral video of her return baraat and reached out to her, saying he admired her courage. They slowly became friends, and he also met her father. In time, Kunal proposed to her. Though she did not agree immediately, she eventually chose to move forward after seeing his respect and patience. Sakshi and Kunal later got married.

From a painful marriage to a hopeful new beginning, Sakshi’s journey highlights the power of family support. With her father standing firmly beside her, she was able to rebuild her life and move ahead with confidence.
