A seven-and-a-half-year-old cocker spaniel in Delhi has undergone a pacemaker implant surgery, which veterinary surgeons claim to be the first in India.A pacemaker is a small device that's placed in the chest or abdomen to help control abnormal heart rhythms. This device uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate.
An imported pediatric pacemaker was implanted in the dog, named Khushi.Dr Bhanu Dev Sharma, a veterinary doctor from Delhi said, "Khushi’s wasn't functioning normally. The amount of blood which flows out of the heart had reduced significantly and she kept fainting because of this. This is because there was a blockage in her. Her heart rate was 20 beats per minute compared to normal 60-120 beats per minute," The dog was operated upon on December 15. After the pacemaker implantation Khushi who used to be extremely tired and lifeless before the surgery is back to her normal active self, feels as if she is back to puppyhood.
