BMC Announces 10% Water Cut in Mumbai & 25% in Navi Mumbai
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on 24 June announced a 10 percent water cut starting from June 27, becauseof inadequate rainfall in the areas of lakes supplying water to Mumbai.
Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi are the main lakes that supply water to Mumbai. However due to insufficient rains, there is hardly any water left in the lakes. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on 24 June announced, “Due to insufficient rainfall & insufficient water stock in the 7 dams & lakes that supply water to Mumbai Metropolitan Area, 10% water cut will be implemented in areas under BMC jurisdiction & areas where BMC supplies water from 27 June, 2022," The 10 per cent cut will also be enforced in areas falling under neighbouring Thane and Bhiwandi municipal corporations and some villages till water stock improves in the lakes. Highlighting that the June rainfall has been about 70 per cent less than the average showers recorded during the month in the previous year, the BMC has appealed to citizens to use water carefully. In some lakes there is no water at all. All of this is due to climate change. Meanwhile Navi Mumbai has announced a 25 percent water cut.
