BJP Wins Assembly Elections in Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya

In a clean sweep,BJP won the assembly election held in the 3 NorthEast states - Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

Assembly elections in the state of Tripura were held on 16th February 2023 and in Meghalaya and Nagaland on 27th February 2023.  The counting of the votes was done on 2nd March 2023.  To note, the states of Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya have 60-seat Legislative Assemblies. The majority mark required to form the government in these states is 31 seats.

Here are the results of the assembly results in the 3 states. 

In Tripura, the BJP won 32 seats and its ally, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) won one. Chief Minister Manik Saha might continue as the CM. 

In Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP are allies. NDPP won 25 seats and its alliance partner, BJP won 12 seats in all 37 seats. They are set to form the government again and Neiphiu Rio is poised to return as CM for the fifth term. 

In Meghalaya, the National People's Party (NPP) had an alliance with BJP and United Democratic Party (UDP) and were running the current government.  The NPP-BJP had a coalition government in Meghalaya, inter-party ties turned sour before the 2023 elections. However, NPP said it was open to partnering with BJP again.  NPP won 26 seats, while the BJP managed to win 2 seats and the United Democratic Party (UDP), won 10 seats and is set to join hands with the NPP again. CM Conrad Sangma is likely to hold on to his chair as the CM. 

Flanked by BJP bigwigs Amit Shah and JP Nadda, PM Modi Modi arrived to a roaring welcome by the BJP workers at the BJP office. The prime minister began his address by urging the party workers to switch on the flashlights of their mobile phones in honour of the people of Northeast. “I humbly thank the people of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya. These people have blessed the BJP and its allies. Besides, I congratulate the BJP Karyakartas of these three states. It isn't easy to work in the northeast, and therefore a special thanks is due to them”, Modi said.
