Amit Shah Holds Meeting for Coal Shortage in Indian States

The country has been facing a severe shortage of coal, as a result, various Chief Ministers of the states, have been asking people to save electricity, and also have warned of power cuts. However, the

Three thermal power stations have been shut in Punjab, four in  Kerala, and thirteen in  Maharashtra. All due to a shortage of coal. 

Fearing electricity shortage, the Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Punjab have requested the Central government to increase coal supply to their states. 

Maharashtra's electricity department has urged citizens to save electricity and the Kerala government warned that they may have to resort to load-shedding. 

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and warned that there may be a complete blackout in Delhi because of coal shortage.  Punjab, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu, are also facing the same problem. 

Union Power Minister R K Singh on Sunday 9 October stated that coal supply will be maintained and an “unnecessary panic” was being created over the issue.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had a meeting with various ministers who were handling the coal shortage problem. 

The Indian government has listed several reasons that led to the coal shortage.

These include a surge in demand for electricity due to the revival of the economy after a deadly COVID-19 outbreak, heavy rains in coal mine areas last month and rise in prices of imported coal.
