West Bengal Elections: Mamta Banerjee Refuses to Resign As CM

West Bengal is facing intense political violence and a constitutional crisis after the BJP’s election victory and Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign.

West Bengal is witnessing rising political tension and violence after the BJP’s victory in the Assembly elections.

On the night of 6th May, crude bombs were hurled at BJP workers in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, near the residence of newly elected BJP MLA Ratna Debnath. Five BJP workers were seriously injured and rushed to R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Police later launched an investigation using CCTV footage.

The attack came just hours after the murder of Chandranath Rath, an aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. In another violent incident, BJP worker Rohit Roy was allegedly shot by suspected TMC supporters in Basirhat while putting up BJP flags to celebrate the party’s win.

As clashes spread across the state, authorities confirmed that over 400 people have been arrested and more than 200 FIRs registered so far.

Meanwhile, Kolkata DCP Shantanu Sinha Biswas has come under scrutiny after the Enforcement Directorate issued a lookout notice against him in a money laundering case. Reports say he skipped questioning multiple times.

Despite losing the election, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign, accusing the BJP, CRPF, and Election Commission of conspiring against the TMC and “stealing” the election. She claimed TMC workers were attacked and blocked during counting.

While BJP leaders, including Himanta Biswa Sarma, demanded her removal, Akhilesh Yadav met Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata and expressed support, saying the BJP was trying to “snatch away” people’s voting rights.

West Bengal Governor R. N. Ravi stated that if Mamata Banerjee does not step down, she could be removed from office. With the BJP now holding the majority, the Governor has dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 7th May 2026, setting the stage for a major constitutional and political showdown.
