5 Members Of Same Family Found Hanging in Bihar

Financial crises and debt can cause stress beyond what someone could ever imagine. In one such incident 5 members of a debt ridden family in Bihar were found hanging in the house.

Financial crises and debt can cause a lot of stress. In one such incident 5 members of a debt ridden family in Mau village, Bihar were found hanging in the house. The horrifying suicide refreshed the memory of the mass suicide by 11 people in Delhi’s Burari in 2018 and several other such mass suicide across the country.

Let me tell you about the Bihar family. It is being reported that one of the family members, Manoj Kumar Jha, had taken loans worth Rs 3 lakh from several people and was unable to repay them. His wife too had taken loans from some women. However some other reports said that Jha was a small-time shopkeeper who sold tobacco and was under immense stress to repay loans his mother had drawn from local self-help groups. He had also taken loans from banks and had a business of running two four-wheelers and two autorickshaws. This business was also running into a loss.

As per some neighbours the family had a total loan of over Rs 18 lakh. Their two four-wheelers and one autorickshaw were seized because they were unable to pay the monthly installments to the banks. The entire family was in stress over debt. The moneylenders were continuously putting pressure on them to pay back the amount. The matter about the death of all members of a family came to the knowledge of villagers on 5th June 2022 morning when some of the moneylender women reached Manoj’s house to collect money. As there was no response to the repeated knocking on the door, the women informed the neighbours who peeked into the house from windows to find all members hanging. The Vidyapati Nagar police reached the spot. The bodies found inside the house have been identified as Manoj Kumar Jha (42), his wife Sundarmani (38), his mother Sita Devi (65) , and his two sons Shivam (7) and Satyam (10).

However, Manoj’s married daughter who reached the village after hearing about the death of the entire family, said it is not a matter of mass suicide but a case of murder. She alleged the money lenders murdered Manoj and all members of his family as the poor family was unable to pay them back Rs 3 lakh that it had borrowed to wed off his younger daughter, a few months back. Police is now investigating the case with angles of both- suicide and murder and is trying to find out the reason behind the deaths.  The bodies of all the deceased have been sent for a post-mortem examination and the report is awaited. The statements of many co-villagers have been recorded and police said that the reason behind the deaths could be confirmed only after the results of the autopsy report come.
