10,000 Bangladeshis Have Tried to Enter India

The incomplete fence and rocky terrain across the India-Bangladesh border has led to an increase in infiltrators from bangladesh.

On 23rd July 2019, the government informed the Lok Sabha that Since 2014, 10,746 people from Bangladesh have tried to cross the India-bangladesh border to enter India. Out of these 9,702 of them were caught near the West Bangladesh border. Nityanand Rai the Minister of State said that border guards have caught 369 this year till 30th June. Whereas near the Assam-Bangladesh border only 65 people were caught trying to cross the border. Rai said that said that border guards are constantly patrolling the border. They are doing everything to stop people from Bangladesh from Illegally entering the country.

However some areas near the border are extremely rocky. The land is very bad and it is difficult to place a fence. People take advantage of this and enter India. India has spent Rs 1,157 crore in the last five years to build a fence on the India-Bangladesh border. 353 km of the border still has to be fenced. Which is why so many people are able to enter India. The government has promised to complete the work 2020.
