Caring for Dogs During Diwali

While we enjoy the festival of diwali, our pets and other animals go through a tough time.

Diwali is known as the festival of lights. We celebrate this festival by celebrating with family, bursting crackers etc.

While we enjoy this, the lous noise of the crackers can make our pets and other dogs and cats anxious and frightened. This is because their hearing ability is much stronger than humans. They hear sounds more loudly than humans do.

Here are a few ways how you can keep your pet safe and happy during diwali.

  • Before the celebrations begin, feed your pet, and also give it ample water to drink. If your pets stomach is full, it will feel less anxious. You can also close the doors and windows of the room, so that the noise is as minimal as possible.

  • If your pet is anxious, it may try escaping the house, and go on the road. Make sure that your pets collar has your contact details on it, so incase it goes anywhere, people can call you if they find your pet.

  • If your pet allows it, then you can try covering its ears with a soft cloth. This will help to reduce the noise your pet hears. You can also increase the tv volume, or play some music to distract your pet.

  • You can give them their favourite treats or food to keep them happy

  • If your pet gets scared and hides under the sofa or bed, dont leave it alone. Sit near your pet and keep it company.

When the celebrations are over, make sure you clean the place properly. Crackers contain chemicals and your pet may stamp in it. This will cause irritation to your pet.

While taking care of your own pets, please also take care of stray animals. They too may be frightened.

Lets make Diwali a happy festival for them as well!
