Woman Locked Inside Toilet 1.5 Years

Women Protection and Child Marriage Prohibition Officer in Haryana rescued a woman who was locked in a stinky toilet by her husband for more than a year and a half.

In Rishpur village in Panipat, Haryana, Women Protection and Child Marriage Prohibition Officer Rajni Gupta received information about a woman who was locked up and mistreated. Gupta then decided to rescue the woman. With her team, Gupta reached the house and found the woman lying inside a stinky toilet. She was extremely thin and very weak. When Gupta gave her chapatis to eat she quickly ate 8 chapatis. After a bit of questioning and investigating, they found the woman was 35-years-old and had been married for 17 years. The woman was subjected to inhumane treatment by her husband for 1.5 years. She was locked up inside a toilet and not given much to eat.The woman's husband, Naresh, claimed they locked her because she was mentally unstable. "We ask her to sit outside but she does not sit there. We have taken her to doctors but there was no improvement in her condition,"

Officials, however, weren't convinced with the "mentally unstable" claim as Naresh couldn't furnish any document about her alleged illness. Gupta said, “Conversations with the frail victim indicated that she was mentally sound. But we can not confirm whether she is mentally unstable or not. She was locked in the toilet and wasn’t even provided water to drink. We rescued her and washed her hair. We have filed a police complaint. Police will take action accordingly," she said. The couple has three children who are all under the age of 18.

During the investigation, officials felt the woman's children's behavior towards the woman was also bad. The children will be counseled to understand if they helped the father in the crime. A case has been filed against the Naresh. The woman was taken to Civil Hospital initially and is now with her cousin.
