Women To Perform Kirtan In Golden Temple

The Punjab State Assembly announced that Sikh women will now be allowed to perform kirtan at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Women who sing Sikh hymns are allowed to perform kirtan in all Gurdwaras of Punjab, but not in the Golden Temple. The Golden temple is the most important temple in Sikhism. State Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa said, in Sikh history women have always been treated equal men there has never been any discrimination. The Shiromani Akali Dal leader Jagir Kaur had also asked permission for Sikh women to perform Kirtan at the Golden Temple.  

The Punjab State Assembly on Thursday, November 7 announced that Sikh women will now be allowed to perform kirtan at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. This is to make sure men and women are equal. The decision was passed by a special assembly session for the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. The decision said that, Guru Nanak Dev wanted a society everyone is treated equally. He never wanted discrimination on the basis of caste or creed, social status or gender. This is why they will allow women to sing in the golden temple. The decision will now be sent to the Akal Takht which is a Sikh group and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) which manages all sikh temples for their final permission.
