Who was Rehman Dakait? Gangster Played by Akshaye Khanna in Dhurandhar
Dhurandhar brings to life the shocking and violent story of Lyari gangster Rehman Dakait, portrayed powerfully by Akshaye Khanna.
There is huge buzz around the newly released film Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar. The movie stars Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, and Akshaye Khanna. While Ranveer plays the main lead, it is Akshaye Khanna who has caught everyone’s attention. His powerful performance, especially a dance scene, has gone viral on social media.
Akshaye Khanna plays Rehman Dakait, a character inspired by a real-life gangster who once ruled the Lyari area of Karachi, Pakistan. In reality, this gangster was even more violent than shown in the film. Lyari was originally built by Hindu, Sindhi, and Baloch communities and once thrived. After the formation of Pakistan, the area faced neglect, leading to poverty and crime.
Rehman Dakait was born as Sardar Abdul Rehman Baloch, son of drug smuggler Mohammed Dadal and Khadija Bibi. He committed his first crime at 13 and later shocked everyone by killing his own mother at 19. He joined Lyari’s gang world and later formed his own gang with Uzair Baloch and Baba Ladla, engaging in drug smuggling and weapon sales.
Rehman also entered politics, worked closely with Benazir Bhutto and the Pakistan People’s Party, and formed the People’s Aman Committee. His growing power led to his death in a police encounter on 9 August 2009.
After his death, Lyari witnessed extreme brutality, including the shocking murder of Arshad Pappu in 2013. Today, Lyari has changed and is known more for football and boxing than crime.
