Urmila Matondkar Files Election Papers Amidst Controversies

Actor turned politician Urmila Matondkar, files her election papers North Mumbai, faces competition from the BJP party.

Urmila Matonkdar was a Bollywood actress, and has acted in a number of movies, before she decided to enter into the world of politics. She joined the Indian National Congress on the 27th of March, 2019, after she met with the Congress chief, Rahul Gandhi, in Delhi. She was inducted into the party by a Congress spokesperson, Randeep Surjewala, and Mumbai Congress Chief, Milind Deora, in Delhi.

She will contest elections on the Congress ticket, from North Mumbai. After filing her nomination papers, she took out a road show, and received immense support from her followers. She was seen greeting people through the sunroof of an SUV, with joined hands, while sporting a turban, and a scarf of the INC.

Ever since her entry into politics, she has been surrounded by a number of controversies.

The Election Commission of India in an order, prescribed that no political party should use the image of any of the Armed Forces personnel of the country, in their election campaign. Yet Matondkar used the picture of Indian Air Force wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, in one of her campaigns. She faced severe flack for this action.

Apart from this, on a TV show, she said that Hinduism was a tolerant religion and that now, under the Modi government, it has become very violent. Suresh Nakhua, from the BJP filed a police complaint against Matondkar, on the pretext that she has hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community. Matondkar stated that she meant that Hinduism was a very tolerant religion, but has now become violent.

She also blamed the current government for keeping the people busy with discussions on Caste and Religion and not paying attention to other important aspects like employment of the youth etc.
