16 Fake Doctors Arrested! Class 10 Pass Man Ran Clinics for 33 Years
Many people remember the Bollywood film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., in which the main character pretends to be a qualified doctor. But a similar situation has reportedly been uncovered in real life in Surat, Gujarat.
Police have arrested 16 people accused of running clinics in the Pandesara area without recognised medical qualifications.
According to police, the accused were prescribing medicines, administering injections and even giving patients glucose and saline drips. Some had studied only up to Class 10 or Class 12.
How Did Police Catch 16 Alleged Fake Doctors?
The case came to light in Pandesara, an industrial area of Surat with several migrant worker settlements and labour colonies. The Surat Police Special Operations Group (SOG) received information that several people were running clinics without the required medical qualifications. To verify the information, officers sent decoy patients to suspected clinics.
After confirming the allegations, the SOG joined hands with the district health department and conducted simultaneous raids at 16 clinics. The operation involved Chief District Health Officer Dr Anil B. Patel, along with police officers. All 16 accused were arrested.
What Did Officials Find Inside the Clinics?
According to police and media reports, some clinics were operating in unhygienic conditions. Officials found patients receiving intravenous (IV) fluids, commonly known as glucose drips, while lying on ordinary wooden cots. Medicines, disposable plastic bags and medical waste were reportedly scattered around the premises.
Investigators also alleged that the accused were prescribing allopathic medicines and administering injections without the required medical qualifications. The authorities seized medicines, injections, cough syrups and medical equipment worth Rs. 1,82,444 during the operation.
Who Were the Repeat Offenders?
Police said three of the 16 accused had previously faced action for allegedly practising medicine without the required qualifications.
One of them was Siyaram Maurya, 54, who ran Sai Dham Clinic. He had allegedly been practising for around 24 years and was previously caught in 2002. Another accused, Vinod Vishwas, 58, who ran Chancey Clinic, had reportedly studied up to Class 12. He had allegedly been practising for around 30 years and was previously caught in 2008. The third accused, Saddam Bankhan, 31, had also previously been caught by the SOG.
One Man Allegedly Ran Clinics for 33 Years
One of the most striking details concerns Kapilkumar Arjun Prasad Verma, 58, who ran a clinic called Free Seva Sadan. According to police reports, Verma had studied up to Class 10 but had allegedly been operating clinics at different locations for around 33 years. The investigation also found that several accused had previously worked as hospital helpers or compounders before moving to Surat.
According to police, many originally came from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. They allegedly started treating migrant workers for common illnesses such as fever and malaria while presenting themselves as qualified doctors.
What Legal Action Will Be Taken?
Cases have been registered against all 16 accused at Pandesara police station.
The district health department is also preparing separate proceedings under the Gujarat Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2021. The operation has raised serious concerns about the safety of patients who may unknowingly receive treatment from unqualified practitioners. Taking medicines, receiving injections or getting IV treatment from an unqualified person can put a patient's health at serious risk.
People should always check whether a medical practitioner has the required qualifications and registration before receiving treatment.
