US Republican Leader Labels Lord Hanuman ‘False God’

US politics is again in the spotlight for controversial statements about religion. Republican Party leader Alexander Duncan from Texas called Lord Hanuman “a false Hindu God” and said America is “a Christian nation.”

This controversy revolves around the 90-foot-tall Lord Hanuman statue, known as the “Statue of Union,” located at Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, Texas. Unveiled in 2024, it is the 3rd-tallest statue in the US and celebrates Hanuman’s role in the union of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita.

Duncan posted a video of the statue on X, saying, “Why are we allowing a false statue of a false Hindu God to be here in Texas? We are a CHRISTIAN nation.” His comments went viral and faced backlash for being anti-Hindu and inflammatory. He also quoted the Bible (Exodus 20:3-4) and made disrespectful remarks about Islam, calling it a “terrorist organization” and criticizing Muslim parades in Atlanta.

This comes as Duncan plans to run for the Senate, and is part of a wider trend in the US where religion, especially Christianity, is being emphasized in politics. President Trump has previously stated, “When faith gets weaker, our country gets weaker. We are one nation under God. WE HAVE TO BRING BACK RELIGION IN AMERICA,” and established a Religious Liberty Commission in 2025 to recommend constitutional changes aligned with Christian faith.

With 62% of Americans identifying as Christian, 7% with other religions, and 29% unaffiliated, these statements appear aimed at securing votes from the majority Christian population. Whether this signals a long-term shift in US ideology or political strategy remains to be seen.
