PM Modi’s “Naraz Fufa” Remark: What Did He Mean?

PM Modi’s “Naaraaz Fufa” remark targeting government critics has gone viral, sparking a BJP social media campaign and criticism from Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

On 8 September 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth Rs.35,000 crore at the NaMo for Viksit Bharat event in Vadodara, Gujarat.

However, his remarks about the opposition became the biggest talking point. Without naming anyone, Modi referred to critics as “naaraaz fufa ji” (angry uncle), saying some people oppose every government project by asking, “Why is it needed?” He cited projects such as the Statue of Unity, high-speed train, UPI and the new Parliament building as examples.

The BJP’s social media team quickly turned the phrase into a campaign targeting opposition leaders, particularly Rahul Gandhi, even releasing a song portraying him as “Fufaji.” During Gandhi’s visit to Rae Bareli, some people reportedly taunted him by chanting “Naaraaz Fufa.”

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticised Modi’s remarks, saying the government keeps creating new labels for its opponents while its policies remain unchanged. He cited terms such as “Dimaagi Naxal,” “Urban Naxal,” “Khan Market Gang,” “Andolan-jiwi” and “Parjivi” as examples.

The “Naaraaz Fufa” remark has since become a major political talking point and a viral social media trend.
