The Supreme Court of India Unveils the New ‘Lady Justice’ Statue

The Supreme Court of India unveiled a new Lady Justice statue, symbolizing a modern and transparent justice system aligned with Indian values.

On 16th October 2024, the Honourable Supreme Court of India revealed the new ‘Lady Justice’ statue, which represents India’s modern law and justice system. The old Lady Justice statue was made during the British Raj, following British ideals of justice. It showed Lady Justice blindfolded to represent fairness and holding a sword, symbolising punishment. She was also dressed in a gown with her hair tied up.

The new statue, ordered by Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, moves away from the British-era symbol. Unlike the old version, the new Lady Justice is not blindfolded. This change represents that India’s justice system is clear, sees everything, and treats everyone equally.

In the new statue, Lady Justice holds the Indian Constitution in her left hand instead of a sword. This symbolises that Indian law is not violent, and justice is delivered based on the Constitution. The traditional ‘weighing scales’ (tarazo), representing fairness and balance, are still present. In fact, they are raised in her right hand, showing that the courts weigh both sides equally before making decisions.

Additionally, the new Lady Justice is dressed in a saree, with her hair open and adorned with Indian jewellery and a crown, reflecting Indian culture. The statue now stands tall at the judges' library in the Supreme Court.

This updated symbol of Lady Justice represents India’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and constitutional values, reflecting the evolving justice system of modern India.
