Teacher Gets 6 Months Jail And Rs. 1 Lakh Fine For Slapping Student

A Vadodara teacher was jailed for 6 months and fined Rs. 1 lakh for slapping a student, sparking debate on discipline vs abuse.

A teacher from Vadodara, Gujarat has been sentenced to 6 months in jail and fined ?1 lakh for slapping a 15-year-old student during tuition. The case, which happened in 2019, has now gone viral after the court’s judgement, and people on social media are giving mixed reactions.

The incident took place on 23rd December 2019, at a private coaching centre where Jasbirsinh Chauhan, an English and Social Science teacher, used to teach the student, Tejas Bhatt.

That day, Tejas called his father to bring his exam form to the class. When his parents arrived at the centre, they heard sounds of slapping and beating from inside. When Tejas’s father entered the classroom, he saw Chauhan repeatedly slapping his son.

According to the complaint, Chauhan was angry because Tejas had missed two days of class where important topics were taught. The beating was so severe that Tejas suffered serious injuries, including a torn and bleeding eardrum. He later told his parents that the teacher had hit him on earlier occasions too.

Even though Chauhan apologised many times, the parents filed a police complaint. He was arrested in January 2020. After nearly five years of court hearings, the court finally gave its decision — 6 months of jail and ?1 lakh fine.

After this news became viral, many people started sharing their own school-time memories of being beaten by teachers. Some people supported the judgement, while many others felt it was too harsh.

One user wrote, “Teachers have the right to punish. Earlier, PT teachers made us stand in the sun for hours just for coming late. That fear made us disciplined. Now it's called crime. Sad.”

Another commented, “If this rule was there in our time, our teachers would’ve paid lakhs in fines! But honestly, those beatings helped us learn.”

A few people joked about the judgement. One person wrote, “If this judge was there during my school days, my math teacher would’ve paid ?30 lakhs by now!”

Others were serious, saying bigger crimes are going unpunished, and the court should focus on more important issues.
