Sniffer Dog Tyson Helps Security Forces Eliminate 3 Terrorists After Being Shot

Brave army dog Tyson helped soldiers catch three armed militants, including a senior Jaish-e-Mohammed commander, in Jammu and Kashmir.

A long search operation was going on quietly in the mountains and forests near Chhatroo in Jammu and Kashmir. For more than a month, security forces had been tracking a small group of heavily armed militants believed to be hiding in the area.

Intelligence from different agencies suggested that these men were planning attacks. Teams from the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) carefully searched the region.

Finally, on 22 February 2026, the forces launched a focused operation. They surrounded the suspected area and moved step by step through thick forest and steep slopes.

With them was a trained sniffer dog named Tyson, a German Shepherd from the Army’s elite 2 Para Special Forces. Dogs like Tyson are trained to move ahead of soldiers and detect hidden threats using their sense of smell.

As the team climbed the hillside, Tyson caught a strong human scent. He led the soldiers to a small mud hideout built into the slope. Tyson went inside the hut first, and the militants hiding there started firing.

Tyson was hit by a bullet in his leg but stayed focused and continued signalling the exact location of the attackers. This helped the soldiers plan their attack quickly.

A gunfight broke out on the forested hillside. The fight was intense, and the hut caught fire. Three terrorists were killed during the operation.

One of the militants killed was a senior commander linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, identified as Saifullah Balochi. Officials said he had been active in the region for nearly two years and had escaped earlier security operations. He was also believed to be involved in past attacks, including one in July 2024 in which four soldiers were killed.

After the operation, security forces recovered weapons including AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and other materials, showing that the militants were fully equipped for attacks. Nearby residents felt relief, as the presence of armed militants had caused fear and tension for a long time.

Tyson was immediately evacuated and airlifted for specialised treatment at a military facility. Despite his injury, he survived and is now stable while recovering.

This operation highlights the important role of trained sniffer dogs like Tyson. Their sense of smell is far stronger than humans, and they are trained to detect human scents, explosives, and weapons. In forests and mountains, where visibility is low, these dogs help soldiers find hidden threats and save lives.
