Shubhanshu Shukla: India’s Pride in Space
Shubhanshu Shukla was born on 10 October 1985 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Inspired by the stories of the Kargil War, he dreamed of serving the country. He joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) and became an officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF). With over 2,000 flying hours, he earned recognition as a skilled test pilot.
In 2019, ISRO selected him for the Gaganyaan mission. After training in Russia and India, he received another opportunity in 2025. On 25 June 2025, he went to space as the mission pilot for Axiom Mission 4, organized by Axiom Space. He flew on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS).
During his 18-day stay, he orbited Earth more than 300 times and completed 60 experiments, including 7 from ISRO, focusing on health, farming, and advanced materials. On 28 June 2025, he spoke live with PM Modi from the ISS and even shared about carrying “gajar ka halwa” to space.
After safely returning on 15 July 2025, Shukla was welcomed as a national hero. He presented the Indian flag and mission patch to PM Modi and was honoured by the Uttar Pradesh government as a State Guest. A scholarship in his name was also announced.
Shukla’s journey from Lucknow to space is a symbol of India’s growing role in science and technology. His mission has inspired millions of young Indians to dream bigger and reach for the stars
