Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan Sign Major Defence Pact: Why It Matters?
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed a defence pact under which an attack on one will be treated as an attack on all three.
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed a new defence agreement in Mecca on 7 August 2026. The agreement, called the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, was signed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The main point of the agreement is that an attack on any one of the three countries will be treated as an attack on all three. The aim is to strengthen their collective defence and make potential enemies think twice before attacking them.
The agreement comes as West Asia faces serious security tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran. Saudi Arabia, which is a major oil producer, is also concerned about threats to its territory and energy infrastructure.
The full agreement has not been made public yet. However, the three countries have said they want to strengthen military cooperation and work together on security.
Saudi Arabia brings strong economic and regional influence, Pakistan has a large military and nuclear weapons, while Turkey is a NATO member with a strong defence industry. Together, the three countries have significant military and economic power.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia already have a close defence relationship, while Turkey has also increased its military cooperation with both countries. The new agreement brings all three together under one defence framework.
Some experts have compared the agreement to the beginning of an “Islamic NATO”, although it is too early to say whether it will develop into such an alliance.
The deal does not mean Saudi Arabia is ending its security relationship with the United States. However, it shows that Saudi Arabia wants to build stronger defence partnerships with other countries as well.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it was closely following the development. The agreement is important for India because it has strong economic and strategic ties with Saudi Arabia, while it has tensions with Pakistan and disagreements with Turkey.
