Prime Minister Ambani? Elon Musk Targets India
Elon Musk has accused powerful business interests of delaying Starlink’s entry into India and publicly questioned Mukesh Ambani’s influence.
Elon Musk vs Mukesh Ambani: Why Is Starlink’s India Entry Controversial?
Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind SpaceX, has publicly criticised the delay in launching his satellite internet service, Starlink, in India. He has said that powerful business interests of creating problems, and has directly questioned the influence of Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani.
The dispute has sparked a wider debate about competition, government regulations and national security. Here is what happened and why Starlink’s entry into India has become controversial.
What Is Starlink?
Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s space technology company. It uses satellites in low Earth orbit to provide internet access, including in remote areas where traditional broadband and mobile networks may be limited.
Why Did Elon Musk Target Mukesh Ambani?
On October 7, 2026, Musk posted on X that he wanted to bring Starlink to India but alleged that powerful businesspeople were preventing its entry. He referred to them as “oligarchs”, a term used for very wealthy and influential people who may have significant political or economic power.
On October 8, Musk questioned why Starlink had not received permission to begin services in India, despite operating in more than 165 countries. He then asked whether Mukesh Ambani was “the real boss of India”. Musk’s comments suggested that he believed powerful business interests were affecting Starlink’s entry into India. However, these are his allegations and do not establish that Ambani or Reliance caused the delay.
Rahul Gandhi Joins the Debate
On October 8, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi responded to Musk’s post, saying, “Welcome to India, Elon. Wait till you discover the other guy.” Many people interpreted “the other guy” as a reference to businessman Gautam Adani. Gandhi has previously criticised the relationship between major business groups and the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On October 9, Musk addressed Ambani sarcastically as “Prime Minister Ambani”. He said that Starlink could help people in areas with no internet access and that its entry would benefit citizens.
On October 10, Musk shared a screenshot of a news report related political funding by Reliance. This added to the online debate about the relationship between big business and politics. Claims about political funding should be understood in the context of the reports cited, rather than treated as proof that Reliance influenced Starlink’s approval process.
Why Has Starlink Not Started Services in India?
India regulates satellite internet services through a licensing and security process. Companies must meet government requirements before they can begin commercial operations.
The government has said that its regulatory framework for satellite communication services is fair and non-discriminatory. Starlink is not the only company involved in this process. Other satellite communication providers, including OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications, have also been seeking or completing the necessary approvals.
National security is an important part of the discussion. Satellite networks can provide communication during emergencies and in remote regions, but governments may also have concerns about lawful monitoring, data security, and control over communication services.
Starlink is a private service, but SpaceX also provides Starshield, a separate satellite system designed for government and national security users, including the US military. This has prompted questions in some countries about dependence on satellite networks operated by foreign companies.
Will Starlink Be Affordable for Indians?
Cost is another important question. Satellite internet usually requires specialised equipment, in addition to a monthly subscription. Its price may be a barrier for many households, particularly when compared with India’s relatively low-cost mobile data plans.
Prices quoted for Starlink in India before its commercial launch have been estimates, not confirmed retail prices. Its actual affordability will depend on the equipment cost, monthly charges and the plans offered when the service becomes available.
In Bangladesh, where Starlink has launched, reports in July 2026 said it had attracted just over 5,000 customers during its first year. The report showed its limited reach partly to its high cost, with many customers being businesses or people able to afford the service.
What Does This Dispute Mean for India?
The central question is whether Starlink’s delayed entry is mainly the result of regulatory and security checks, commercial competition, or a combination of factors. Musk has accused powerful business interests of obstructing the process, while the government has said that its rules apply fairly to satellite communication companies.
For now, the dispute highlights the growing importance of satellite internet and the debate over who gets to shape India’s digital future.
