PM Modi's 5 Nation Tour: UAE to Store 30 Million Barrels of Oil in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s five-nation tour is focused on strengthening India’s partnerships in energy, technology, space and strategic cooperation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a major five-nation tour on 15 May 2026, visiting the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy at a time when global oil markets are under pressure due to tensions in the Middle East.
His first stop was the UAE, where his aircraft was escorted by fighter jets to Abu Dhabi, reflecting the close ties between the two nations. During talks with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE agreed to store up to 30 million barrels of crude oil in India’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve, significantly strengthening India’s energy security.
In the Netherlands, PM Modi met King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and visited the Afsluitdijk dam with Prime Minister Rob Jetten. India is studying this model for Gujarat’s Kalpasar Project. The two countries also signed 17 agreements.
In Sweden, PM Modi held talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on trade, AI, defence and space. Sweden announced it would join ISRO’s Shukrayaan mission to Venus, and PM Modi was awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star, Sweden’s highest state honour.
PM Modi reached Oslo on 18 May and will conclude the tour with a visit to Italy. Overall, the trip highlights India’s efforts to strengthen partnerships in energy, technology, space and infrastructure.
