Mumbai Traffic Police’s New Idea to Reduce Honking
To curb the menace of incessant honking and the increasing noise pollution, the Mumbai Traffic Police have come up with a very unique idea. Watch the video to know more.
One thing that people waiting in traffic hate the most is the consistent honking of the cars. Because some people feel their honking is going to act like a force field that will push vehicles in front of it away, clearing the path for them. However it doesn’t do that, instead, it just creates a ton of noise pollution.
Mumbai, much like other metros in the country is home to a ton of traffic -- either due to the metro construction or BMC fixing roads elsewhere. However, this honking problem only makes situations worse. So much so that
This noise was something the traffic police of the city experienced every day and they really wanted to do something about it. And committing to Mumbai’s cool factor, they surely found a really cool way to make people limit this annoying habit.
The traffic police installed microphones with a decibel (DB) meter at traffic signals that showed the noise the traffic was making, in real-time.These traffic signals were already equipped with a timer to allow people to know when the signal would change.
During the countdown, if it heard the honking of vehicles crossing certain decibels, it would reset the counter for another 90 seconds. Every time the noise went up, so did the wait time on the timer.
Video of this was recorded and it went viral all over social media. Every time the timer reset, people got so confused. It was so funny. Eventually, people were able to figure out that it’s the honking that’s making everything worse and they stopped doing it, making the signal turn green.
The video ends with two traffic policemen high-fiving each other -- signifying an accomplished mission.
Mumbai Police surely is the coolest!
