Understanding the Skeletal System and Muscular System | Signs of Health
Our bones and muscles work together every second to give our body support, movement, and protection, helping us stay active and healthy.
Have you ever tried sitting completely still without moving? Even then, your body is not really resting. Many parts inside your body are working all the time. Two important systems that help us every day are the skeletal system and the muscular system.
The skeletal system is made up of all the bones in our body. An adult has around 206 bones. Bones give our body shape, support and strength. They also protect important organs like the brain, heart and lungs. Bones are living tissues that can grow and repair themselves after an injury. Inside many bones is bone marrow, which makes blood cells. Bones also store minerals like calcium, which help our body work properly.
The muscular system has more than 600 muscles. Muscles help us do everything from walking and smiling to breathing. They are attached to bones by strong tissues called tendons. When muscles contract, they pull the bones and create movement. Since muscles can only pull, they work in pairs. Some muscles work when we choose to move, while others work automatically, like the heart and the muscles that help us digest food.
The skeletal system and muscular system always work together. Bones give the body support, while muscles move the bones. Without bones, the body cannot stand. Without muscles, the bones cannot move. Both systems are equally important.
If our bones and muscles are not healthy, we may have broken bones, joint pain, muscle cramps, weak bones or poor posture. To keep them healthy, we should eat calcium-rich foods, get enough sunlight for vitamin D, exercise regularly, maintain good posture and stay active.
Our bones and muscles work every second, even when we are resting. Taking good care of them helps us stay strong, active and healthy throughout life.
