Masood Azhar Declared Global Terrorist
In a huge diplomatic win for India, the United Nations on Wednesday designated Masood Azhar as a "global terrorist" after China lifted its hold on a proposal to blacklist the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mo
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is made up of 15 member nations.China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America are the 5 permanent members.
Masood Azhar is the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), which carried out a suicide bombing in Pulwama, J&K on 26th February 2019. After these attacks, in March, permanent members of the UN which are USA, Britain and France repeatedly urged the UNSC to declare Azhar as a “Global Terrorist”. Russia, another permanent member also supported their request.
India had first requested the UNSC to declare Azhar as a global terrorist 10 years ago.
China is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council who hold veto powers. They had earlier blocked the proposal on technical grounds.
Finally the United Nations on Wednesday declared Masood Azhar as a global terrorist after China withdrew their objection.
Why was India so keen of getting Azhar declared as a global terrorist? What happens after this declaration?
Asset Freeze
All member states of the United Nations are required to freeze the funds, financial assets and economic resources to Masood Azhar.
Travel Ban
All member states are required to prevent the entry into and transit of Azhar through their territories.
Arms Embargo
Member states are required to prevent the direct or indirect sales of weapons or any materials related to the manufacture of weapons.
Azhar's designation as a global terrorist will force Pakistan to act against him and individuals and groups associated with him.
This will result in a total shutdown of his organisation and its institutions such as terror camps and madrasas.
In response to the Un’s decision PM Modi has said that, “This is a big win for India”. He is very happy that the world has finally come to know the truth about Azhar. He said that this is only the beginning, People have to wait and watch what happens next.
