When people speak of strength, Mary Kom’s name naturally comes to mind. A six-time world champion, Olympic bronze medallist, and mother of four, she has inspired millions. In 2025, her personal life made headlines when she confirmed that she and her husband, Karung Onkholer (Onler), had quietly divorced in 2023.
Mary Kom, who grew up in Manipur, became a global icon for breaking barriers in women’s sports. She married Onler in 2005 after he helped her during a difficult time in Delhi when she had lost her luggage and documents. Over the years, the couple built a loving family with twin sons Rechungvar and Khupneivar, son Prince Chungthanglen, and adopted daughter Merilyn.
Onler, a former footballer and government employee, was known for his calm and steady support of Mary’s career. For nearly two decades, the two were seen as a strong team, balancing sports, travel, and family life.
In April 2025, Mary Kom confirmed that their divorce had been finalized on 20 December 2023 under Kom customary law a private community process involving both families and clan elders. She clarified that the separation was mutual and denied all rumours of any affair.
Mary explained that she kept the divorce private to protect her family and only spoke after false reports spread online. Today, she continues mentoring athletes and working through her foundation, while Onler remains out of the spotlight, continuing his community and administrative work.
