A resident of Prayagraj’s Chahchand Gali named Khunti Guru was not found anywhere after the stampede.

On the evening of 28th January 2025, Guru told others he was going to take a dip at the Sangam during Mauni Amavasya. But when the stampede occurred the next morning, there was no sign of him.

Despite extensive search operations over the following days, Guru could not be traced, and his neighbors, assuming he had become one of the stampede victims.

Therefore, Guru was also declared dead in the stampede. His family initiated his last rites and rituals without his body.

However, when the family was observing Guru’s tehrvi on 11th February 2025 and performing the rituals, an e-rickshaw stopped outside the house and Guru stepped down from it.

His family was stunned to see him!

Confused with what was going on, Guru asked, “What are you all up to?” with a smile on his face.  His innocent question left his family and neighbors speechless.

The overwhelmed family enquired Guru where he had been for so many days, what had he been doing, etc.

Guru replied that he had not died in the stampede.

After taking the second dip on 28th January 2025’s evening, Guru engaged talking with a group of sadhus and

smoking chillums at the Mela. He said he had simply lost track of time while enjoying the Mela and was completely unaware of the panic and mourning his disappearance had sparked in his family & neighbourhood.

By the time Guru finally returned home, his family and neighbors had already held all the customary ceremonies to honor his supposed spirit except the last day (tehrvi -13th day pooja) one.

Guru’s return turned the moment of sorrow into a surreal and joyful reunion, leaving his loved ones both relieved and astonished by the unexpected turn of events.

Recently, a stampede occurred at the Delhi Railway station killing 18 people & severely injuring 15 people, most of whom were travelling to Prayagraj for Mahakumbh.

The Mahakumbh Mela at Prayagraj is the world's biggest human gathering event.

Did you know, so far, over 11,000 tonnes of waste have been collected and disposed off from the Mahakumbh?

Daily 400 tonnes of waste is collected by 1,000 vehicles and over 15,000 sanitation workers at the Mela grounds, and 8,000 workers in the city.

This includes the cleaning of 1.5 lakh toilets installed in the mela, cleaning the riverbanks, and removing religious offerings like flowers, garlands, coconuts and other puja materials using specialised trash skimmers (special machines which sort garbage).

The cleaning and sanitation teams work around the clock, continuously cleaning roads, collecting waste and managing all waste disposal activities.

The work of Prayagraj’s cleaning and sanitation department is highly commendable.
