Maharashtra Cancels Fake Ration Cards After Big Check
Maharashtra checked all ration cards using Aadhaar and photos. Over 18 lakh fake cards were cancelled. Rich people and even foreigners were using them wrongly.
The Maharashtra government has cancelled over 18 lakh fake ration cards after a big e-KYC campaign. These cards were being wrongly used by people who were not poor or not even eligible.
Every state in India, including Maharashtra, gives ration cards in different colours. These are meant to help low-income families get subsidised food grains (grains at cheaper rates). In Maharashtra, orange ration cards are given to those who qualify for this help.
But the government found that many people who had enough money were still using these cards. Some were government employees, some were even from other countries like Bangladesh, and some families were using ration cards of people who had already died.
To stop this misuse, the government started an e-KYC campaign. People had to show their Aadhaar number and face photo using mobile apps like “Mera eKYC App” and “Aadhaar Face RD App.”
After checking all the details, the government discovered that many cards were fake. Some people were even selling cheap ration food to poultry farms for profit.
As a result, 18 lakh ration cards were cancelled, mostly in Mumbai and Thane.
So far, around 5.2 crore people in Maharashtra have completed the e-KYC check. But 1.65 crore people still need to do it.
Even though the main campaign is finished, checking will continue. The goal is to make sure that only the people who really need help get ration cards and subsidised food grains.
