Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Sanjay Roy Claims He's Innocent

The trial for the Kolkata rape and murder case began, with the accused claiming he was framed by senior police officers.

The trial for the brutal rape and murder of a female trainee doctor from RG Kar Hospital & Medical College in Kolkata, which shocked the nation in August 2024, began on 11th November 2024 at Sealdah Court under the supervision of additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das. The trial has been held ‘in-camera’, meaning closed to the public, to protect the privacy of the victim and witnesses.

In August 2024, a young female trainee doctor was found brutally raped and murdered in Kolkata. The crime sent shockwaves across the city and the country, leading to public outrage and protests. The doctors’ community also went on strike demanding justice for their colleague.

The victim was a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital & Medical College, a well-known state-run hospital. The case has been widely covered by media outlets, including ISH News. If you missed any of our earlier videos on the incident, you can watch them here:

One of the key accused in the case, Sanjay Roy, a former police volunteer, appeared in court on 11th November as the trial began. During the court proceedings, Roy made explosive claims, saying he was “framed” by senior police officers. He accused Vineet Goyal, the former Kolkata Police Commissioner, of being involved in a conspiracy against him.

Roy, while being escorted by police, told reporters, “I have done nothing. The police officers have been threatening me. I am naming them. They are Vineet Goyal and DC Special… They have conspired to frame me.” He further claimed, “The state government is behind all of this and I am being trapped.”

This was not the first time Roy has made such allegations. He had previously claimed his innocence when the charge sheet was filed on 4th November 2024, stating that he was being falsely accused.

Roy was also seen shouting from the police van as he was taken back to jail, saying, “I am innocent. They have falsely arrested me.”

Vineet Goyal, who was Kolkata's Police Commissioner at the time of the crime, has faced severe backlash since the incident. The police admitted that a Kolkata Police bike used by Roy on the day of the crime was registered in Goyal’s name. All government vehicles in Kolkata are officially registered under the Commissioner of Police, but Goyal claimed he was unaware that Roy had used this bike.

Goyal was suspended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in September 2024, along with other senior police officers, after junior doctors protested and demanded action. Goyal was replaced by IPS Manoj Verma as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner.

Roy also mentioned DC Special, a senior police post, without naming a specific officer. DC Special stands for Deputy Commissioner or Deputy Commander in the police force. This has raised questions about who exactly Roy was referring to and whether someone in a powerful position is using their legal power to avoid justice.

The claims made by Sanjay Roy have raised many questions, and the matter is now under close scrutiny. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to give a clear and urgent response to Roy's allegations.

The trial is still ongoing, with 128 witnesses expected to testify during the case. The court hearings are taking place daily to ensure the case is fast-tracked due to the seriousness of the crime.

This high-profile case continues to unfold with new and shocking developments. As the trial proceeds, many are waiting for answers to the serious allegations made by Sanjay Roy. Will justice be served for the young victim? Stay tuned to ISH News for more updates on this case.
