19 Dead at Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal!
A stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata on October 17 left 19 people dead and 25 injured after heavy rain triggered a crowd surge.
One Exit, Narrow Lanes, 19 Deaths - Inside Kolkata’s Stampede
A stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata, West Bengal, killed 19 people and injured 25 others on October 17, 2026.
What Happened?
Thousands of people had gathered at the pandal to celebrate Durga Puja. When heavy rain began, visitors rushed to find shelter, leading to overcrowding and confusion. As people moved through the narrow lanes and towards the exit, several fell amid the crowd surge. This triggered a stampede.
Reports said many of those who died were women and children. The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Why Did the Stampede Happen?
Investigators are examining several possible factors, including overcrowding, narrow access lanes and the pandal’s single exit.
Reports also suggest that an announcement warning that the pandal might collapse may have caused panic. Investigators are trying to establish who made the announcement and whether it contributed to the crowd surge. The exact sequence of events and the responsibility for the tragedy remain under investigation.
Seven People Arrested
Police arrested seven people in connection with the incident, including members of the organising committee and private security personnel.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to understand how the crowd was managed and whether safety arrangements were adequate. Authorities have also ordered reviews of safety arrangements at other Durga Puja pandals. Some major pandals temporarily stopped allowing visitors as a precaution.
Government Announces Financial Assistance
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced Rs.25 lakh in compensation and a Group D government job for the family of each person who died. The state government also announced Rs.5 lakh for each injured person and said it would cover their medical expenses.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced additional assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. The families of those who died will receive Rs.2 lakh each, while injured people will receive Rs.50,000 each.
Questions Over Crowd Safety
The stampede has raised serious questions about crowd management and emergency planning at large public gatherings. Investigators are examining whether the number of exits, the narrow surrounding lanes and the crowd-control arrangements contributed to the incident.
The investigation is ongoing. The findings will be important in understanding what went wrong and what steps may be needed to prevent similar tragedies at future events.
