Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has declared a state of emergency across the country for the next 48 hours. There is a war on Israel’s northern and southern borders. In the north, Hezbollah has launched over 300 rockets and drones into Israel, targeting civilian and military sites. Hezbollah is a Muslim militant group and political party based in Lebanon. It was founded in the early 1980s with the support of Iran. The key events leading to the escalation are:

  1. Assassination of Fuad Shukr: Hezbollah's senior military commander, Fuad Shukr, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon. Shukr was a high-ranking figure in Hezbollah, responsible for many of the group's military operations, including its missile program. His assassination was seen as a major blow to Hezbollah and prompted the group to vow revenge. 23 August 2024.

  2. Assassination of Hamas Leader in Tehran: Around the same time, the political leader of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh, believed to be involved in coordinating activities between Hamas and Iranian authorities, was assassinated in Tehran, Iran. Israel was widely blamed for this killing, further inflaming tensions between Israel and Iranian-backed groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. Hezbollah and Iran promised that they would respond to Israel. Now they have done it. In response, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have conducted strikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The situation remains highly volatile, with fears of further escalation. Simultaneously, Israel continues its military operations in Gaza. The IDF is advancing deeper into Gaza, targeting militant groups. This has led to heavy casualties on both sides, further intensifying the conflict. With the emergency in effect, daily life in parts of Israel has been disrupted. The government is urging citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols as the situation unfolds. This emergency situation is known as a "Special situation in the home front". In simple terms, this declaration gives the government and military more control over what people can do, such as issuing guidelines on where to go or how to stay safe. The emergency measures are meant to help keep the public safe during dangerous times, like during military conflicts or attacks. The special situation lasts for 48 hours, but it can be extended if the government decides it's necessary. As Israel navigates this critical period, the world watches closely, concerned about the potential for further regional instability.
