Indian Sign Language Tableau at 72nd Republic Day Parade

ISH News applauds ISLRTC, MSJE & DEpwd for showcasing a Indian Sign Language tableau at the 72nd Republic Day parade and making it an inclusive event for all Indians.

Assamese, Gujarati, Tamil, Ladakhi, were among the many Indian languages that were spoken at the 72nd Republic Day Parade. But surprisingly for the first time, even Indian Sign Language was used at the parade. The Tableau of Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) at the Republic Day Parade and showcased the theme ‘Bhartiya Sanketik Bhasha– Ek Rashtra, Ek Sanketik Bhasha’. In the Tableau, there were 12 artists, in the age group of 20-23. They were performing the theme song in Indian Sign Language. It highlighted the unifying nature of Indian Sign Language (ISL) in a nation, where there is a great diversity in spoken languages.

The tableau had models of a few hands folded in interpretive gestures, letters and other elements. The aim of the Tableau is to raise awareness and highlight the commitment of the Government towards creating a barrier-free environment for persons with hearing disabilities by promoting ISL. Our sincere appreciation to DEpwd has given the opportunity a tableau of ISL was showcased at the 72nd Republic Day parade.
