Indian Officials Release Suspected Chinese Spy Pigeon

Indian officials released the pigeon being held captive for 8 months under the suspicion of it being a Chinese spy on 3rd February 2024 after PETA got involved.

While the Indian officials didn’t sing this, they followed the instruction of ‘letting the pigeon go’ when they released a pigeon suspected of spying for China and held it for eight months in custody. The suspected bird was found at Pir Pau Jetty in suburban Chembur by the RCF (Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers) police in May 2023. It had two rings, one made of copper and another made of aluminum, tied to its leg. Messages written in a Chinese-like script were also found on the underside of both its wings. Even the police had registered a case of spying against the bird initially and started an investigation. During the investigation, it was found that the pigeon was a participant of a flying race event being held in Taiwan and had accidentally flown to India. Throughout the investigation, the pigeon was held captive in Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals (BSDPHA) in Parel. After learning that a pigeon is being held captive as case property for an astonishing 8 months, animal rights organization, PETA’s India office decided to get the bird free. PETA India contacted Mumbai police and asked them to immediately release the bird as no evidence of it being a Chinese spy were found. The police dropped all the charges filed against the pigeon and ordered the hospital to check the bird’s health condition before setting it free. The Pigeon was released on 3rd February 2024 by hospital’s chief medical superintendent, Colonel (Retd) Dr B. B. Kulkarni. Can an innocent-looking real bird like a pigeon be a full-fledged spy?
